Matthew 19:26 ESV
Believe it or not, I remember Easter 66 years ago. It probably helps that I have had pictures to look at that remind me of the stories. I know the year because we were still in the house I first lived in.
That summer we prepared to move (one block over). The spring dress I had on in the picture was light pink. Even though it’s a black and white photo I know it’s pink because they were always pink. I did argue about it but i didn’t win…at least until I turned 12 years old. That was the year my mom and I had a discussion about my dress code. I always had to wear pink, black patent leather shoes, and for school saddle oxfords. The argument was really about the saddle oxfords, but gradually she started to accept the fact that I was growing up. I know for a fact that my dad helped to initiate the change.
After that I was allowed to wear red dresses (my preference) and penny loafers. Today, I’m grateful that my granddaughters were able to wear jeans to school. That choice simply makes much more sense.
I particularly remember going to church on Easter morning. We didn’t have people at our church who only came once or twice a year, but Easter was always crowded and extra chairs were handy. Often on Easter members had family visiting and chairs were needed.
I loved (love) Easter because the Easter story about Jesus coming out of the Tomb fascinated me. I believed it as a child but I didn’t really understand it. The funny thing today is that I still love it and I still don’t really understand it.
That’s because we believe by faith. At some point I accepted the fact that by faith we believe that Jesus rose from the dead.
In Luke 24:1-11, “On the first day of the week, very early in the morning, the women took the spices they had prepared and went to the tomb. They found the stone rolled away from the tomb, but when they entered, they did not find the body of the Lord Jesus. While they were wondering about this, suddenly two men in clothes that gleamed like lightning stood beside them. In their fright the women bowed down with their faces to the ground, but the men said to them, “Why do you look for the living among the dead? He is not here; he has risen! Remember how he told you, while he was still with you in Galilee:‘The Son of Man must be delivered over to the hands of sinners, be crucified and on the third day be raised again.’ “Then they remembered his words. When they came back from the tomb, they told all these things to the Eleven and to all the others. It was Mary Magdalene, Joanna, Mary the mother of James, and the others with them who told this to the apostles. But they did not believe the women, because their words seemed to them like nonsense.”
Once I really realized we can only understand the aspect of what happened on Easter morning by faith I accepted God’s capability of doing the impossible.
Scripture tells us in Matthew 19:26, “Jesus looked at them and said, “With man this is impossible, but with God all things are possible.”
That fact is finally what I came to believe.
God alone made the resurrection and our salvation possible. In other words if God can raise Jesus from the dead, God can raise us from the grave into heaven to live in eternity.
In Jesus, Deborah
