The Grass is Always Greener on the Other Side

Philippians 4:13 ESV

Even though I grew up in church and memorized Bible scriptures regularly, as an adult I asked God to

sent the Spirit to  teach me about scripture. Because of my experience with the Billy Graham Crusades I

KNEW about the Spirit of God. When I told my dad about my request he told me he would pray for me.

I spent the next ten years memorizing every scripture God sent my way, it turned out to be a wonderful

journey!

Little did I know it at the time, but all that memorizing taught me how to memorize.  I used that skill later

when I became involved in drama and speech.

God knew I would need that skill long before I knew it.

Scripture tells us instead of thinking about your neighbor, consider God’s promise we find in Philippians

4:13, “I can do all things through him who strengthens me.”

Little did I know when I was in elementary school that I would memorize and repeat that verse over and

over again in high school, college where I studied Speech Communication, and in Seminary where I

studied scripture, counseling, leadership, and Hebrew. I was alright with the massive amount of reading

and pages and pages of papers, but Learning Hebrew was another story. There was so much

memorization I was overwhelmed!

A day did not go by that I didn’t repeat “I can do all things through him who strengthens me.”

During the Hebrew Grammar course I hardly slept. I wanted to quit. God reminded me I can do all things.

I cried every night.

When it came time to take the final for Hebrew 2 I wasn’t sure I would pass.

It turned out, I did pass…barely. I received the lowest grade I’ve ever received in my life. So I went to the

registrar and asked if I needed to repeat the class. He sat back in his chair and smiled. He told me I did

not need to repeat the class because I passed. In addition to that he showed me my file and told me my

grade point average was high enough that one low grade for a four hour class would not make a dent in a

program that required 144 hours to complete. He also told me that Hebrew three did not require

memorization.

He was right. When I took Hebrew 3 I did just fine.

Then when I walked into Hebrew 4 I was surprised to find another professor at the desk. I found out he

taught Hebrew for 30+ years and then retired. The only class he taught now was Hebrew 4…Composition

in Hebrew.

It was absolutely wonderful and I came to LOVE Hebrew!

I smiled. I can do all things through Christ who gives me strength.

Through Jesus,

Deborah
