I had the privilege several years ago of being part of a group of people who had the gift of healing. Not everyone on the team had the gift of healing others physically, but the people who faithfully came week after week to pray for healing for others all had the gift of healing in different ways. God made it clear to me that He gave me the gift of healing emotional wounds.

When I worked with the healing team I learned that there are several basic kinds of healing. The main types of healing are Spiritual, Physical, Emotional, Relational, and I’ll call the last healing of the Mind (also referred to as Mental healing).

Healing in scripture is found throughout the Old and New Testaments.

In the Old Testament, regarding the children of Israel, God told Moses in Exodus 15:26, “If you diligently heed the voice of the Lord your God and do what is right in His sight, give ear to His commandments and keep all His statutes, I will put none of the diseases on you which I have brought on the Egyptians. For I am the Lord who heals you.”

In 2 Kings 20:5, God told the Prophet Isaiah (regarding Hezekiah, King of Judah): “Thus says the Lord, the God of David your father: “I have heard your prayer, I have seen your tears; surely I will heal you.”

And in Jeremiah 17:14, the Prophet Jeremiah cried out to God asking for healing: “Heal me, O Lord, and I shall be healed; Save me, and I shall be saved, for You are my praise.”

In the New Testament Gospels, we read in Luke 6:19, “And the whole multitude sought to touch Him, for power went out from Him and healed them all.” Everywhere He went, Jesus healed the broken of every kind of infirmity. Word of His healing power spread like wildfire and people came to see and experience His healing.

In I Peter 2:24, Peter the Apostle who saw Jesus heal every kind of wound wrote, “He himself bore our sins in his body on the tree, that we might die to sin and live to righteousness. By his wounds you have been healed.”

Mary Magdalene was the first person who went to the tomb and found Jesus was not there. Peter was the first of the Apostles to see Jesus on the morning he arose. In Matthew 16:18, Jesus told Peter, “you are Peter, and on this rock I will build My church, and the gates of Hades shall not prevail against it.”

In James 5:14, the half brother of Jesus wrote, “Is anyone among you sick? Let him call for the elders of the church, and let them pray over him, anointing him with oil in the name of the Lord.”

In The Message, James 5:14 says, “Are you sick? Call the church leaders together to pray and anoint you with oil in the name of the Master. Believing-prayer will heal you, and Jesus will put you on your feet.”

When I was in my twenties I thought when I prayed for someone and they were not healed it was because I didn’t have enough faith. I thought I didn’t BELIEVE it enough.

In my late sixties, I’ve learned a few things about faith and believing. Jesus really meant it when he said we only need faith as big as a mustard seed. The Amplified Bible explains Matthew 17:20 well when Jesus answered them: “Because of your little faith [your lack of trust and confidence in the power of God]; for I assure you and most solemnly say to you, if you have [living] faith the size of a mustard seed, you will say to this mountain, ‘Move from here to there,’ and [if it is God’s will] it will move; and nothing will be impossible for you.”

I did believe.

I did believe enough.

But, I wasn’t giving God the reigns.

See, when we pray for healing we may trust God whole-heartedly. We may have full confidence in the power of God.

But, what I learned with age and wisdom is that life is a crazy journey and I’m not in charge. It’s not up to me. That’s because God sees the big picture. God knows the plans He has for us (Jeremiah 29:11). Only by the power and will of God can I see what God has for another person. If God does not heal someone the instant we pray for them. It could be because their healing needs to come slowly. Or it could mean God has a better plan for them and their infirmity will help them grow and see God. There are hundreds (if not thousands) of reasons why God does what He does. And there are hundreds (if not thousands) of ways God heals us.

The point is, WE are not God.

WE were not there from before the beginning.

WE are not infinite. God is. God has no limits…no beginning and no end.

Only God (Father, Son, Spirit) is infinite. Only God sees the big picture for everyone.

And only God knows what healing means and what it looks like for every person.

Today’s Spiritual Practice is: Turn to God

Ask God to heal you in some way today.

In God, Deborah
