Exodus 3:1-3 Moses and Sinai
Imagine walking around in a field where you are tending sheep. You can see the sheep at all times and you can hear the sheep.
You must watch and listen for the slightest movement or sound.
You watch and listen because every sheep matters.
Literally even today every sheep matters to the genetic diversity of the herd.
Because the sheep instinctively know every sheep matters they clump together for a reason…it protects the herd from predators. Without even knowing all of the reasons why every sheep matters they instinctively know.
God created them to gather because they matter.
Every sheep also matters because when they clump together the herd is protected ‘as one’ from predators. When they stick together they can defeat a lion by weight and mass. If they clump together they can trample the predator with their combined weight. If the sheep panic and scatter and the shepherd is not watching and managing the herd properly, a predator can separate the herd and have one sheep for dinner.
The day Moses was tending sheep in Midian tending the herd was especially important because this flock belonged to his father-in-law who was a priest in Midian.
Moses would not have wanted to report the loss of sheep because he fell asleep or didn’t pay attention while he was on the job.
In addition to who owned the flock, every sheep mattered because every sheep provided milk, meat, and wool for clothing.
As Moses watched and listened for the slightest sound and movement an angel appeared.
Little did Moses know at the time that he was being watched.
God had Moses on the radar.
Exodus 3:1-3 says, “Now Moses was keeping the flock of his father-in-law, Jethro, the priest of Midian, and he led his flock to the west side of the wilderness and came to Horeb, the mountain of God. And the angel of the Lord appeared to him in a flame of fire out of the midst of a bush. He looked, and behold, the bush was burning, yet it was not consumed. And Moses said, “I will turn aside to see this great sight, why the bush is not burned.”
It turned out that God had Moses in the radar for a specific reason.
While God loves all of creation, there are those who are called by God for a specific purpose.
Moses was chosen for a purpose.
As is usually the case those who are chosen by God often don’t portray the picture of what you might expect. We remember Moses the baby had been hidden in reeds a basket at rivers edge because the Egyptian pharaoh decided killing the male Hebrew babies would make the Hebrew population more manageable.
But God had plans for Moses so he led the Pharaoh’s daughter to a spot where she would hear the crying baby. She adopted the Hebrew child and raised him as her son. Moses’ brother Aaron was not hidden because he was much older than his baby brother.
The messenger (angel) who appeared inside a flame making the ground holy. The word holy in Hebrew is pronounced Kadosh and means to be set apart for a divine specific purpose.
The divine purpose was to deliver the Hebrew people from slavery to the Promised Land.
His purpose was to serve as prophet and act as mediator between God and man.
His purpose was to receive the divine covenant of moral and civil laws which included the Ten Commandments.
Yahweh God definitely had plans for the baby left in a basket in the reeds.
