Smart Dogs

I’ve had a few dogs in my lifetime and while they were all wonderful, a few of the were extremely smart.

I have specific opinions about my current very smart dog, mostly that he is a great judge of character. He is half poodle and half Schnauzer…it’s a perfect mix. Both breeds are highly intelligent. Poodles were originally bred to hunt and retrieve. Schnauzers are wary of strangers and make excellent watchdogs. They don’t trust those they don’t know and their sense of smell is exceptional.

In graduate school (Seminary) I was given every personality test psychologists and scientists have written because it’s essential that Pastors and Spiritual Directors can be trusted. According to the tests I am naive…too trusting. I was told that can be a problem and I need to be aware I need to protect myself.

Back to my dog…the schnoodle who guards me day any night.

He is my creep detector.

He smells, sniffs, makes eye contact, and either wags his tail or backs up.

Every time he has backed away from someone and I investigate I have found he is correct in his assessment.

The moral of the story is, if you have a smart dog, trust their instinct.

Trust your working dog.
