It’s a Journey.

Learning to trust your dog is a daily journey.

One of the things I learned about Auby is that if he won’t eat it, don’t eat it. Throw it away.

I have learned a lot from my dog, especially about food safety.

The doctors aren’t sure why but my senses are not as acute as they should be…even as a child I couldn’t see, hear, or smell as well as other children my age. I did have a very high fever followed by a series of convulsions before I turned a year old.

Doctors have speculated that could be the cause but because it occurred in 1953 there was and is no proof.

I found ways to cope with my eyesight through glasses.

My hearing is segmented to separating out background noise, so when I’m listening to someone and there is background noise I read lips.

I’ve utilized various ways to cope with my sense of smell. One way was by relying on my dogs.

My first dog was a poodle. He was extremely helpful. As an adult I’ve had a basset hound, a miniature schnauzer, and two schnoodles.

I’ve learned if I am not certain if leftovers from the frig are alright to eat or are spoiled, I can absolutely count on my dog.

This line of thought was ‘brought on’ because I was recently watching a historical fiction show written by Charles Dickens.

A young man asked an older man, “do you trust me?” And the older man looked intently at the younger man an then he smelled him.

The sniff did the trick. He decided he trusted the younger man.

My current schnoodle is now older, but his sense of smell is intact. He will eat whatever is safe to eat. If he won’t touch it, I wrap it and put it in the trash.

Moral of the story…I don’t know many people nowadays who go around sniffing others. We let our dogs do the sniffing.
