Series: Hear Me
John 10:16 ESV
Psalm 139,7-11 MSG
This morning I was starkly reminded of generational differences that impact us all the days of our lives.
People who were born around the time of the Great Depression think in terms of living with barely enough to survive. Even if it’s cheaper to buy in bulk they don’t believe in buying in bulk.
Boomers buy in bulk because it’s cheaper in the long run and because shipping is free. That makes perfect sense to me when it’s an item that is used daily.
Ergo…not all sheep (even sheep of the same fold) think alike.
In John 10:16 Jesus seemed to be aware of the differences…even the differences of modern man. We know Jesus knew there were sheep of different folds in the first generation and in the generations to come and he still tells us. “And I have other sheep that are not of this fold. I must bring them also, and they will listen to my voice. So there will be one flock, one shepherd.”
So, while it’s difficult for some believers to understand there is nothing Jesus did not see and know add to that the reality that time and space meant nothing to Jesus.
God is not God of one time period. God has no beginning and no end. Plus, God is not bound to past present or future.
God is not limited by spacial reality. God is not confined to a three dimensional space of the universe. Ourp universe is finite but God is infinite.
God is omnipresent. Psalm 139:7-11 tells us,
“Is there anyplace I can go to avoid your Spirit to be out of your sight?
If I climb to the sky, you’re there!
If I go underground, you’re there!
If I flew on morning’s wings to the far western horizon,
You’d find me in a minute— you’re already there waiting!
Then I said to myself, “Oh, he even sees me in the dark!
At night I’m immersed in the light!”
Even though God created space, time, and dimensions, God is not confined to those dimensions. God transcends the universe. At this point in time man has not determined if there are multiple universes but God is endless so anything is possible.
God sees and hears us at all times wherever we reside.
I am directionally impaired and while my Mother can always tell (even at night) how to walk toward the south, I’ve never had that kind of sense of direction.
She tried to teach me but I couldn’t get it.
I was really frustrated about that to the point of being mad at myself, so I asked my dad why I couldn’t get it. He shrugged his shoulders and told me he didn’t know the answer to that but he did know that God knows where I am all the time, day or night.
When I was a child he taught me Psalm 139:7-11 and he told me to memorize that scripture so I would always remember even if I might from time to time feel like I I was lost God knows where I am all the time and God can guide me home safely.
My dad also taught me to listen to God so I could hear God whisper to me.
As a result I stopped being freaked out about getting lost.
Now when I don’t know where I’m at or where I’m going, I pull over and close my eyes, and I wait for God to give me directions. God never lets me down.
