From the Jar
The thing about walking in the light is that we need to WALK as children of light.
We need walk and talk in the light.
We must not be defeated, for if we believe we will be defeated then we will be defeated.
I’ve taught about our Spiritual Gifts for many moons now, and the one common element that continues to surface is what IS my gift and how do I use it?
I can’t say identifying your Spiritual Gift is easy, but I can tell tell you that once you know what your gifts are it will change you forever. Why is that? It’s because knowing what your gifts are forms a deeper connection between you and God. God doesn’t expect us to do “it” on our own. He gives us special gifts that will help us. God gives other believers different gifts so we can help each other.
That’s because gifts are a great GIFT!
They are a gift bestowed upon you from the creator of the universe. The God of all grace and love looked into your heart and He saw something in you that was so special and unique that He gave you a present that was not like any present you’ve been given. They are part of God.
Your gift will shed great light on who God created you to be.
Ephesians 5:8 tells us,”for at one time you were darkness, but now you are light in the Lord. Walk as children of light.”
You are a child of God and the light of God shines in you.
We are all given unique Spiritual Gifts and some people can readily see their gifts. Others have to pray about it and ask God to reveal their gifts.
I Corinthians 12:18 tells us, “But God has put all parts of our body together in the way that he decided is best.”
God decided. God decided what each person’s Spiritual Gifts should be. We don’t have a say in the matter. It was decided for us and given as a gift.
Even if you don’t understand and don’t comprehend how you can have a specific gift, it doesn’t matter. You didn’t choose it!
Let’s say God decided to give you the gift to heal the sick and God gave you the gift of mercy. Maybe you didn’t understand why sick people sought you out and wanted to touch your hand. When they touched you, an overwhelming feeling of warmth and compassion for them came over you. Quite unexpectedly, time and again people sought you out.
Gradually you noticed more and more people sought you out for healing and mercy.
Pay attention to what God is telling you. You listen to the Spirit, and you surrender to God. God doesn’t want your Spiritual Gifts to be a secret. God wants yo help you!
God chose them for you. Why would they be a secret?
The bottom line is that knowing what your Spiritual Gifts are can be easier than you think. It’s been my experience that when we pray about it, we might realize it’s something we have wondered about.

Once you have some idea what your Spiritual Gifts ARE, you need to know how to use them.
Talking to God about it can be a great help. Ask God to show you and wait. Listen.
So, do you have these Spiritual Gifts?
Romans 12:6-8 tells us about prophecy, serving, teaching, exhortation (persuasion in communication with evangelism, prophecy), giving, leadership (administration), and mercy.
I Corinthians 12:8-10 tell us about being able to give words of wisdom, words of knowledge, faith, gifts of healings, miracles, prophecy, distinguishing between spirits (discernment), tongues, and Interpretation of tongues.
I Peter 4:10 says we can be given the gifts of speaking (prophecy, shepherding) or rendering service (giving, helps, hospitality)
Many of those gifts include wisdom and in James 1:5-6 we learn, “If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask God, who gives generously to all without reproach, and it will be given him. But let him ask in faith, with no doubting, for the one who doubts is like a wave of the sea that is driven and tossed by the wind.”
When it comes to using your gifts don’t be afraid. Remember 2 Timothy 1:7, “for God gave us a spirit not of fear but of power and love and self-control.”
As you use your Spiritual Gifts you will grow. You will come to understand what God means by being children of light. Walk in the light.
That may happen overnight or over the course of time. Everyone is different and God knows that. Be who God created you to be!
Today’s Spiritual Practice is: Your Spiritual Gifts
Pray and write down what you think your Spiritual Gifts are and how God would have you use them.
In God, Deborah
