My dad used to teach my unusual things growing up that I didn’t understand.

One of the exercises had to do with listening and learning how to listen well. I didn’t know it at the time (actually I thought the exercises were re a little silly) but he gave me skills I would use all my life.

One time he was whispering and I was trying to hear what he was saying but he was speaking softly. I told him I couldn’t hear him. So, he told me to read his lips.

it turned out that I realized reading someone’s lips was a valuable tool because hearing alone is difficult if you are in a crowd. It’s been an excellent tool now because as I get older my hearing isn’t what it used to be.

On World Listening Day, think about ways to itilize all of your senses to communicate with others.
