Series: Hear Me

Isaiah 30:21 ESV

I’ve been asked the question numerous times in my life, do we really hear God today?

After questioning those who ask ‘do we hear God today’ I have usually come to understand that someone in their past told them various versions of NO.

They stopped believing God speaks to us today because someone told them it’s not true.

I honestly regret not being in the room. I would have gladly refuted their statement and I would have quoted scripture.

Isaiah 30:21 is just one example, “And your ears shall hear a word behind you, saying, “This is the way, walk in it,” when you turn to the right or when you turn to the left.”

God told Isaiah the promise that the children of God will hear.

It was a solemn promise to the children of God.

I’ve also been told that certain promises only refer to that specific time period and that promise is not available in this day and age.

Also not generally true.

We need to remember that there are specific scriptures that refer to ancient Israel for a specific time period. For example sacrificial rituals that were specific to that period of time.

There are other scriptures that are universal that refer to everyone at any time.

Commandments God gave to man/woman fall into that category. Those are applicable in all cultures at all times.

Then when Jesus came and fulfilled the law it changed how we understand the Old Testament. It did not change the Old Testament. It simple changed how we view the Old Testament. It gave  our understanding depth.

We should read scripture bearing in mind that there are narrative accounts and there are commands. Children who are learning how to read scripture and what to look for are taught when there is a story filled with examples and when a command given. Remember context is king.

In Isaiah 30:21 the reader is reminded that God does speak to those who listen.

The Spirit of God does speak to those who learn to recognize the voice of God. The Spirit of God today does guide us today.

That ‘learning’ is not instant. Not only does listening for the voice of the Spirit of God require dedication, prayer, and listening, it requires patience. God does speak to us today.

Silence helps. At one point in my life I had to learn to separate myself from the voices (people talking, radio, television, etc.) I had to learn to receive the silence of God. That starts by asking God to give you what I’ll call holy silence. The word holy means set apart. So holy silence simply means setting ourselves apart from the noise of this world.

It’s not an easy task.

It takes time and patience.

It IS worth the time it takes to learn to hear God because it is life-changing.
