Colossians 3:12 LB
Sometimes I think the American culture is all about making a grand impression.
Everyone makes an entrance even though they may not intend for it to be a grand entrance.
Yet, Colossians 3:12 tells us, “Since you have been chosen by God who has given you this new kind of life, and because of his deep love and concern for you, you should practice tenderhearted mercy and kindness to others. Don’t worry about making a good impression on them, but be ready to suffer quietly and patiently.”
I would like to be able to say that is not the case with the American church, but in many cases it seems that is the reality.
They must not have received the memo about Paul’s words.
Paul’s words here made me think about Jesus movies I saw growing up. Jesus was pretty grand. They may not have been thinking specifically about Paul’s words in Colossians 3:12 when the directors did the movie. I do think current movies portrayed Jesus in a different way (The Chosen). Jesus was portrayed as being clear and determined when he chose the disciples.
Still our culture does not seek to be humble.
If we are merciful we are thought to be weak.
If we are kind we are a push-over.
If we are bold no one thinks anything about it.
This seems like a conundrum. But really it’s not.
Think of someone you know and admire because they are not given to gossip or speaking ill of others, they speak clearly, they are loving, and always ready to help.
This person is not a push-over.
They are kind but they speak clearly and thoughtfully.
I know several people who meet that description, and they are all believers. They are people who are highly regarded for their truth and their faith.
So, who do you know that fits that description?
In Jesus,
