A Squeaky Wheel Gets the Grease

Mama Said

James 4:10 ESV

Mama did say a squeaky wheel gets the grease. I was the youngest and I was the squeaky wheel when I fell off of my bicycle and got hurt. I’m not terribly coordinated and was always a lot smaller than other kids my age. When I was growing up there weren’t very many bicycle sizes and my bike was pretty big. I fell a lot. If I bought a bicycle today it would be a 24” three wheeler. (I never made 5 feet.)

Now we have choices.

James 4:10, “Humble yourselves before the Lord, and he will exalt you.”

It often surprised me when I was young that Mama had an appropriate saying for everything. I suppose I shouldn’t be surprised because I often heard the same sayings from her Mama and her Gramma.

Change is inevitable and hopefully that’s a good thing. Much of our food from 1950 that we thought was wonderful contained additives that weren’t necessary for the taste…they simply made the food look more inviting so we would buy it.

Fortunately for us I was reminded this week that we do have a squeaky wheel working on our behalf trying to make the food we eat safe. I have believed for many decades that there is a reason many people lost their lives all too early.

While there have been great strides made with the food we eat, it seems there is much more that needs to be done. IN this case I hope the squeaky wheel of food safety continues to squeak about unnecessary additives that simply make it look more inviting so consumers will buy their product.

I learned early in life that whenever I have a problem I can’t solve myself God is always there. God has an open door policy and is ready to help us when we turn. All we have to do it think God. It’s been my experience that enlightenment comes when we turn to God. The simple act of turning opens new doors to the mind that we don’t even know about. Because time and space are not an obstacle to God, when we turn and relax there are unbelievable doors God can open.

I love it that Merriam Webster defines humility as “freedom from pride or arrogance.” Oh my, did they ever get that right. When we turn to God (every time we turn) we are set free from thinking we can do life on our own without any help or guidance. The thought that we don’t even know we need creator God is a form of arrogance.

So, think for a moment what it would be like if teams of scientists realized there are things they do not know and cannot see, and they turned to God.

Think for a moment what it would be like if politicians let go of their arrogance and turned to God. While there are some who do, not all do.

Consider this…how can we honestly vote for a politician who is not a humble Godly person when we in the U.S.A. profess, ‘In God we Trust’.

Our first…absolute first criteria when voting should be knowing the person we vote for is really a Godly person capable of being humble before God. Some might say since anyone can lie and say they are a believer how are we to know.

Once again…humility and listening to God provides the answer. When we humbly turn and listen, God will reveal the truth. The ‘Party’ may not know the truth, but God does.

If Americans (or any group of people on the globe) profess we are a godly country but they vote for anyone who is ungodly, it goes against everything we are meant to be.

It is an affront to us all.

Daily I pray that even when we fail, God will protect and defend us.

In God we Trust.

About Me

I am a child of God. I can’t remember when God wasn’t part of my life. I served in a church setting for 30+ years and now I seek to help others see and find their sacred space. Daily when we turn to God we begin to recognize where God is at work in our lives.
