August 1

August 1 has always been a turning point for summer. Once the calendar
turned we started talking about school starting and what we needed to do to get
ready for a new school year.
For years I drove an ice cream truck during late Spring, Summer, and Early
Fall. As I look back over my life I marvel at God’s wonderful blessings.
Whenever I wanted a job one would fall into my lap. My dad knew the people from
old neighborhood, and everyone went to my grandparent’s store for groceries.
I was told that during the depression my grandpa made sure all of his
customers had enough food to take care of their families.
When they retired and closed the store we found boxes and boxes filled with
papers slips that had been filled out during the depression. I understood when
the debt was settled the papers were given back to the customer.
I was twelve years old when we found the boxes of papers and I asked my dad
why there were so many. He told me only God knows and God takes care of
everything. He also told me the slips weren’t kept because Grandpa intended to
collect the debt. The slips weren’t kept kept because the customers want to know
how much they owed.
I understood from my dad that Grandpa wasn’t concerned about the debt because
he knew God would take care of everything. Isaiah 64:4 says, “For since the world
began, no ear has heard and no eye has seen a God like you, who works for those
who wait for him!” My dad repeatedly reminded me growing up that God always
works on my behalf.
Grandpa was born in 1903 and that’s How they did business then.
When I started looking for a job when I was sixteen I was offered a job driving an
ice cream truck. The fellows who owned the business were old time customers of
my grandparents.
The job was a God-send for me. I worked as an ice cream truck driver even during
college. That money I’d saved made it possible for me to buy a new car (an electric
blue Pinto was $1900) and pay for two years of college ($1200).
That job was not only fun, I was able to have my own car and go to college! God is
very GOOD!
