Mama Said
Philippians 4:13 MSG
When I was in junior high school I became fascinated with the words of promise I read in scripture.
Understand (difficult as it may be) we did not have computers or the internet. I was grown and had
children before I had my first computer. All research was slow and book oriented.
My Bibles were the King James Version and the Revised Standard Version.
Fortunately I was taught that scripture held the key to understanding God and how God interacts with
creation. Philippians 4:13 says, “Whatever I have, wherever I am, I can make it through anything in the
One who makes me who I am.”
The Revised Standard Version of Philippians 4:13 says, “I can do all things in him who strengthens me.”
I remember going to visit my Grandparents on Sunday afternoons when I was young. I was allowed
to take a few books to read while the adults visited. I chose my current fiction book and my Bible. One
afternoon while I sat on the landing of Grandma’s steps something happened that forever changed my
life. I read a scripture (I don’t remember which one) and as I read something happened. The pages on the
Bible moved toward me and became blacker and bolder. It was like to words jumped out at me.
Understand that my Dad was a devout praying man and he prayed for me. That afternoon the Spirit
moved in my heart and I realized God was alive and well through and in the Holy Bible. From that day on
the Spirit has urged me on through scripture. I knew it was inspired and alive.
I know scripture is interactive.
I knew I could do all things through God because God gives me strength.
I knew without any doubt that God would guide me and one way God would guide me was through Holy
Scripture.
Fast forward ten years…I married a young pastor and scripture and the Church became part of my daily
life.
Fast forward thirty years I had a major life altering event that changed my life. At the time I thought my life
fell apart but in time I came to realize when one door closed God would open a new (better) door to a new
life. God called me to go to Seminary. At the time I couldn’t see how I could work full time and go to
Seminary but God had it all covered. Seven years and 144 hours of Seminary classes later I graduated
from Seminary. I didn’t miss one day at my regular job. What a great and wonderful journey it was! One of
the greatest blessings was learning Biblical Hebrew. God gave me strength beyond strength to learn how
to study scripture. While four classes of Hebrew barely scratched the surface, it was a start.
I was reminded through God I really can do all things!
Scripture really IS the Bee’s Knees!
