Psalm 4:1, Proverbs 3:5-6 ESV

It’s been said by many that hearing God respond to our prayers is ‘do-able’ but it’s been my experience that it’s certainly not easy.

It’s a time consuming process.

I don’t think that’s because God doesn’t want to be heard.

More than likely it’s because we don’t know how to listen.

After reading volumes about praying and listening I’m convinced why the majority of people in the western world don’t know how to listen to God.

We beg for answers and we want to hear but we’re impatient.

Scripture tells us. “Answer me when I call to you, my righteous God. Give me relief from my distress; have mercy on me and hear my prayer. (Psalm 4:1)

We get the idea that man is pleading. Man wants to hear from God. So…if God wants to communicate with man and man wants to communicate with God, why is it so difficult?

Realistically there are probably myriad of answers, but it comes down to one key element.

Time.

Well, giving time to wait for communication to blossom.

Wise King Solomon told us in Proverbs 3:5-6 to “Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and do not lean on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make straight your paths.”

The simple understated truth of King Solomon’s words ring true today.

Trust God to show you the way to listen.

Don’t try to figure it out yourself.

God knows you are human and you don’t understand the way of God.

Recognize God is God and you are not. Tell God outright you don’t know how to hear holy words because you are human.

Ask God to clear the way in your mind so you can hear God.

And then be truthful. Tell God you really really want to hear.

Then wait…
