Choose Understanding

When someone constantly puts you down and chides you for decisions you make, we need to remember they are often speaking out of their own insecurity.
Yes…they are insecure and they want you to feel insecure as well.
In order for us to accept that we first need to understand.how we can recover ourselves from the attack.
Yes. It does feel like an attack.
Understanding is the key.
From a psychological perspective we need to have a few tricks in our recovery bag (psychologically speaking). While there are people who can counter their attack instantly it is important the counter attack will be kind. Actually, funny is better as long as it’s kind.
There are people who can accomplish that. I am not one of those people. Once I’ve been attacked I immediately go into a psychological hiding mode.
Knowing and understanding people who make others feel small means we can identify who those people are and be prepared to counter. We can pray and ask the Spirit to protect us from their attack. We also need to pray for that person.
Think of it this way…someone in their childhood attacked them, making fun of them, even publicly laughing at them. While you cannot change what happened to them as a child, you can pray asking God to surround them with love.
God’s love and understanding covers all. Proverbs 3:5-6 tells us, “Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and do not lean on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make straight your paths.”
As we turn to God and trust God (even while someone is trying to make us feel small) we can trust God to give us holy understanding from within.
As we acknowledge God we are believing God will protect us from unwarranted attacks.
God really can place an invisible shield around us to protect us.
God can also help us to understand why the other person says unwarranted cruel things to us. Once we understand there is a reason they attack us (because they have been attacked) we will be able to help them feel safe.
Through the process remember…always remember God understands and will help you.
