Amos 6:11-14 ESV

It seems like our world has lost sight of the meaning and purpose of the power of God. I’m not certain but in my corner of the world many people know there probably is a Creator God (or once was) but God is not active and powerful in the world today.

Many people go about their daily lives without acknowledging God at all.

When I read the words of the prophet Amos it makes me think not realizing Creator God is not active in our lives may not be a new thing.

Amos 6:11-14, “For behold, the Lord commands, and the great house shall be struck down into fragments, and the little house into bits.Do horses run on rocks? Does one plow there with oxen? But you have turned justice into poison and the fruit of righteousness into wormwood - you who rejoice in Lo-debar, who say, “Have we not by our own strength captured Karnaim for ourselves?” “For behold, I will raise up against you a nation, O house of Israel,” declares the Lord, the God of hosts; “and they shall oppress you from Lebo-hamath to the Brook of the Arabah.”

I am captivated by the line, ‘do horses run on rocks’? Of course they don’t anymore that a farmer would try to plow there with an oxen.

Yet…this world (even our world today) everyday turns justice into poison. If you don’t think so, just watch the evening news.

Everything seems topsy-turvy. We seem to have to pick our poison.

Not only did people brag about THEIR conquest, they are proud of it.

We don’t even know the meaning of turning the fruit of righteousness into wormwood. Many people I know have good intentions, but even so those intentions are their intentions. Sometimes they are righteous, but not always.

The expected outcome of righteousness can easily be turned into something harmful.

If man does not believe there is an appropriate judge, then ultimately we are doomed to fail.

As Solomon wrote in Proverbs 3:34, “Toward the scorners he is scornful, but to the humble he gives favor.”

Don’t the scorners need to be named in order to protect mankind?

It seems that’s what Amos was doing.

He was warning Israel to listen to the Lord and the Lord’s commands. You, Israel are not the judge. Today we are not the judge. We are not capable of judging. Without knowing it we walk on rocks everyday. We plow where there are rocks and we aren’t even aware. Daily if we do not stop and connect to the source we can easily go where angels fear to tread.

Yet God, the creator God is ever so close and ready to protect and defend when we turn. One instantaneous sight turn and thought of God is all it takes to connect and receive holy protection. There are no legalistic steps that stand in our way. One thought…one desire and Jesus will comfort and heal. Turn beloved and receive is God’s greatest desire.
