The modern saying for 1 John 3:18 would probably be, “talk is cheap.”

In the 1st Century the Apostle John wrote in 1st John 3:18 to those who were new believers in Christ, “Little children, let us not love in word or talk but in deed and in truth.”

That is definitely no easy task.

The contemporary version of 1 John 3:18 says, “My dear children, let’s not just talk about love; let’s practice real love.”

In other words, stop playing games…get real with love. Talk is cheap. They know real love is not easy task.

I have to admit there are times when loving someone while I’m being told everything I need to do is nearly impossible.

Allow me to explain. My brain is unique. I don’t think in terms of being able to sequentially complete tasks. No logic is involved. There are no steps or planning steps.

Most people are aghast when I tell them that. Immediately they try to “fix” me. The problem is…I don’t believe I’m broken.

I was taught to love. Even knowing we cannot fully love on our own, we are to love. I was also taught that God is love. So…when I am faced with a difficult task, I go to the source of love.

I was taught at a very young age that when I am not sure about what to say or do, I am to turn to God.

In all things, turn to God. I was taught that is what getting real was all about.

Love is real and true and God is love.

So when the things of this world scramble my brain, I need to let go and turn to God for love. It IS God’s love that makes it right.

WE cannot do love on our own. It is God who is love and we turn to God for love.
