Mama Said
Scripture Psalms 119:121-124, 1 Corinthians 13:4
Mama was taught to sew at school when she was pretty young. I suppose that’s because in her day girls
were taught how to sew just because they were girls. It’s funny now because we have now done an
about-face on the gender thing with sewing. We’ve found many men are excellent tailors and
seamstresses. There were male tailors in the late 1920’s but when you saw sewing advertisements from
that time period the model was often a woman.
Because mama was a seamstress she well understood that if you fix a small tear it won’t continue to
grow. In other words, a stitch in time saves nine.
Mama and my home economics teacher tried to teach me to sew with I was in junior high school but it
never really “took”. I prefer hand sewing and quilting in particular. Garment sewing was never my forte’. I
knew by fifth grade that creating texts and speeches was my best skill. The old saying applies in writing
as well. As we write I know when we chase rabbits in the text it’s better to fix the problem before it gets
out of hand so you won’t have to start all over again.
The same principle is true for car mechanics or carpenters. When we do it right the first time we won’t
have to scrap the project and begin again.
That principle applies to our spiritual self as well. In Psalm 119:121-124 we read, “I have done what is just and right;
do not leave me to my oppressors. Give your servant a pledge of good; let not the insolent oppress me.
My eyes long for your salvation and for the fulfillment of your righteous promise. Deal with your servant
according to your steadfast love, and teach me your statutes.” In accordance with the new covenant we
are all offered grace through Jesus and the definition of doing right means we trust in God for it is God
who sets everything right. God didn’t change what was right…God defined it once and for all according to
His steadfast love.
As soon as we see “a tear” we can turn to God who mends all pain with His righteousness. According to I
Corinthians 13:7, “Love bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things.” God’s
love bears all. God’s love gives us the ability to believe, to hope, and to endure all things. Years ago
when I was in my twenties I was told there were certain things we need to do in order to receive God’s
love and eternal protection. I’m not saying that’s wrong, but now I believe receiving God’s love is much
more organic. One thought…one slight turn in God’s direction, one hope of God’s love and protection
is all it takes to turn the tide. With one thought we can rely on Jesus God to mend the tears in our lives.
When we turn and look to Jesus for reconciliation, it is done.
We only need to recognize we have a need to have God mend the pain in our lives and Jesus God is
there.
