1 John 5:15 ESV

If I had to choose one prayer issue I’ve struggled with more than any other it would probably be learning how and what to ask. It may sound silly but 1 John 5:15 gives us a perfect example.

In 1 John 5:15 he wrote, “And if we know that he hears us in whatever we ask, we know that we have the requests that we have asked of him.”

The first thing we notice is that God does hear us.

We do not need to use special words or phrases.

We can ask in any language.

We do not need to be polite (but it’s never a good idea to be mean to anyone).

Next we are promised that God hears our request.

When I was younger I would have been inclined to ask for a new car…or a car that ran well and didn’t have many mechanical issues. We were a family of six and so I pictured winning a bright shiny van.

Then one day we were told my husbands grandfather had something for us. We were curious about what it was, but he went to see his grandfather. It turned out that he handed my husband the keys to his car. It was large enough for all of us and low mileage. It was an avocado green 20 year old monster size Chrysler.

One of my friends told me she believed it was the ugliest car she’d ever seen.

She may have been right, but it met the criteria of my prayer request. It ran great and never had big  mechanical problems. We had the Chrysler during the time when gasoline was very cheap so it was cheap to keep.

We sat three in front and three in back.

The best news was that the trunk was huge!

Ultimately, having a really huge really ugly green tank wasn’t what I had in mind when I prayed for a car, but it was a perfect fit.

It was free.

It was big enough to fit our family.

It ran like a dream, and it didn’t break down.

Insurance on it was super cheap.

‘Fa sur’ the tank was one of the best cars we owned.

Who cares that it was really ugly?

Today…nearly forty years later I think of the gift from God fondly and I am reminded that God is very good!
