Psalm 37:7 ESV

Have you ever had an overwhelming sense that evil is near and ready to pounce?

One of the Spiritual Gifts is discerning spirits. I have this gift. If I could trade it for another gift I would…but I can’t.

That’s not because God doesn’t know I don’t like having this gift.

Instead it’s because God knows there is a plan for my gift.

So when I get fraught with some measure of fear I remember Psalm 37:7, “Be still before the Lord and wait patiently for him; fret not yourself over the one who prospers in his way, over the man who carries out evil devices!”

I put myself in another place.

Instead of focusing on the negative one who carries out evil devices I remind myself God is the creator of life. God creates and recreates.

So while our earthly bodies eventually wear out, when we trust God we are re-created. The re-creation is even better than the creation.

It’s permanent.

That’s because the re-creation is with a Holy Spirit body.

So, let’s go back to the discernment of Spirits. Through the years I’ve come to believe that discerning the Spirits of another isn’t just for information. God has a purpose.

When we are aware of the Spirit (and the spirits) we are given the opportunity to pray for the person before us. It’s almost like laying on of hands in the Spirit. We are given the opportunity of Spiritually touching the person to call then to Jesus. If evil stands in the way of making a spiritual connection we can battle to get past the evil. Note…we are not making a connection to the evil. We are making a connection to the spirit of the person calling them to the goodness of God.

They still have to make the choice to choose the goodness of God.

If they decide to reject the evil and choose God, they still need to act on their choice. When we pray for them we can ask God to send them a good soul who will stand with them on their new journey.

So…why was this explanation of the movement of the Spirit necessary?

I think it’s so anyone who has the gift of discerning spirits can understand the complexity of the gift.

I remember when I was young I thought discerning spirits was simply informational.

As I’ve aged I have come to an understanding of God’s real purpose of discerning Spirits. God does have a purpose…a great purpose for this gift. God wants us to really fully be Spiritually aware and utilize the gift for God’s creation.

The bottom line is that it’s a tough world out there and God does give us tools to do battle…spiritual battle for God.

So if you have a hunch that you have the gift off discerning of spirits, get to it!
