Isaiah 43:2 ESV

While sketching isn’t listed specifically in scripture we do see great evidence of artistic use of verse and beauty in Scripture. When we witness a breathtakingly beautiful sunrise or sunset it really is an artistic gift painted by God.

As we read scripture, especially in the Hebrew we see God at work with vivid words that paint a picture.

Isaiah 43:2 is a perfect example when the prophet heard from God and wrote:

Isaiah 43:2: "When you go through deep waters, I will be with you; when you go through rivers of difficulty, you will not drown".

We can see a person in distress caught in deep water.

We witness God’s promise that when we are overcome with difficulty God promises to be in the water with us.

The promise even accelerates as we see the person who is already in distress.

see there are many more rivers of difficulty yet to come.

Often when we are caught in deep waters of difficulty we feel like we are at the end of what we can possibly bear. It’s no accident that using the same word for the giant ferocious bear has been described in the saying, “bear no more”.

It descriptively shows the fierce battle we are fighting.

That description appropriately describes the image in today’s verse.

When we are caught in deep waters and we feel certain we will drown we turn to God and cry out is despair.

Then the prophet Isaiah reminds us when we are caught in the battle God promises we are not alone.

The Hebrew translation of the photo says ‘when pass through waters I will be there. Through rivers not overwhelm (you).’

The prophet saw and heard the promise that when we feel like we are drowning in difficulty God is there. In that ‘river’ of difficulty you will not drown because God is there. We will not be overcome because God holds onto us.

The next time you feel overwhelmed…remember Isaiah 43:2.
