Psalm 23.5 ESV
Series Rest
I love stories…I’ve always loved stories. My first big book was a large book filled with words and beautiful pictures. I was 5 years old and I was forever hooked on stories!
While science books may have caught my eye in junior high school, for the better part of my life, I have remained captivated by a great story!
I think it may be possible my love for stories are the reason I was led to study scripture. From beginning to end, God has a story to tell about the people of God and God’s love.
And Psalm 20:1-3 it says “may the Lord answer you in the day of trouble! May the name of the God of Jacob protect you! May he send you help from the sanctuary and give you support from Zion! May he remember all your offerings and regard with favor you’re burnt sacrifices! Selah”
In Hebrew, selah means to pause, reflect, and praise.
In God we find selah.
In today’s text, David is singing. He is reminding Israel that we need to pause and consider the full context of what the words say. It is believed this psalm was written when David was grown and was King of Israel. As king with many busy days it’s likely David was remembering his youth when he tended flocks of sheep. While there would have been busy days when he was keeping the wolves away, there were also peaceful days on the hillsides with the sheep.
He was remembering rest.
Because David tended sheep as a youth and served as king of Israel he had a unique perspective on rest, and the importance of rest!
No doubt as king, David longed for the rest of God. In the same manner, we might remember what rest was like as a young adult, what rest was like after a long day of work, and perhaps what rest is or will be like later in life.
I remember rest when my children were young and fast asleep. I also remember the quiet when they were grown and gone. While there were still days of trouble, our trouble is very different from David’s trouble.
And Psalm 20:-3 David is telling us no matter what stage of life we are in whether noisy or quiet, God is always there, always supporting us with rest, and always protecting us.
David‘s words are timeless words that remind us of God‘s loving care! Today know that God sees you and loves you!
