In the Shadow

Psalm 91:1-4 ESV
Today feels like a shadow kind of day. The sun isn’t shining and it seems like tornado weather. I just checked the weather and I was right, even though I was hoping I was wrong. In the last half hour a tornado touched down south of where I live.
Because I grew up in tornado alley I was taught in weather like this we should always have a plan in place. Growing up that included food and water. The food was to be bread and lunch meat or peanut butter. We needed a knife or spoon for the peanut butter. We were also told to bring a blanket and a pillow in case we were in the family room downstairs overnight (generally speaking houses in Missouri have basements).
We did have a television (black and white) and a radio. The other items we might need were always in the basement (flashlights) and other emergency items.
Many decades later I live in a place where there is no basement, but I still have a “go to” place and a plan.
The most important part of my plan is to invite God into the space, and to pray.
Psalm 91:1-4 says, “He who dwells in the shelter of the Most High will abide in the shadow of the Almighty.
I will say to the Lord, “My refuge and my fortress, my God, in whom I trust.”
For he will deliver you from the snare of the fowler and from the deadly pestilence.
He will cover you with his pinions, and under his wings you will find refuge; his faithfulness is a shield and buckler.”
In many ways life many decades later is a bit easier. Electronics has drastically changed so we don’t need to grab a television set or a radio. Everything is on my iPad today.
We don’t need to worry about the power silencing the television or radio because as long as electronic equipment is charged up it will hold for a good long while.
The food hasn’t changed much but we now have bottled water for emergencies.
The main element that stays the same is the promise of shelter from God. Even though it’s the same, I have changed. I now know from personal experience that the shadow of God covers me and I dwell in that shadow. God is my fortress and my refuge. God will cover and deliver me. His ever present faithfulness is a shield.
Since those early days there have been many tornadoes and God has been a shield through them all. Now, it’s a given that no matter what happens God will be our shelter. We do not know the outcome…earth or heaven, but whatever happens God is there.
