Romans 12:3 MSG
Some of us were extremely fortunate to have great Sunday School teachers when we were young. One of my teachers was an educator by trade and she also taught Kindergarten Sunday School at my church.
That year was a turning point for me.
Romans 12:3 says, “I’m speaking to you out of deep gratitude for all that God has given me, and especially as I have responsibilities in relation to you. Living then, as every one of you does, in pure grace, it’s important that you not misinterpret yourselves as people who are bringing this goodness to God. No, God brings it all to you. The only accurate way to understand ourselves is by what God is and by what he does for us, not by what we are and what we do for him.”
My Sunday School teacher taught us that Jesus came to help us and by His gracious love we will go to heaven. She did not tell us that at some point we would have to decide if we want to receive Jesus.
The point was, Jesus loves you.
Jesus wants you to come to Him when you need help.
Jesus is always there for us.
Those basic principles that she taught stuck with me. Because I learned early in life that Jesus loves me and wants me to be with Him when I need help, that was deeply ingrained in me all my life.
I always clearly understood everything was done through Jesus and I can always trust Jesus God.
Later I came to understand who Jesus was as the Son of God and he died for my sins. I came to know the relationship between good the Father, God the Son, and God the Holy Spirit.
As an adult I had the privilege of doing Children’s sermon in regular church service for 30 years. Most of the children who came down front to gather for the children’s sermon were younger. By the time they were taller than the teacher (which was usually a 4th or 5th grade) they listened from their seat.
Regardless of the subject of the Adult Sermon, I usually covered Jesus loves them, Jesus is the Son of God, He will always be there for us.Those are the principles I was taught when I was in Kindergarten.
Not too long ago I had the privilege of visiting my Kindergarten Sunday School teacher and I told her what her teaching did for me. She was well into her 90’s but she understood and she smiled. I hugged her when I left. Not long after that, she went to be with Jesus. I was so grateful God had opened the door for me to see her during her last days. Now when I think of her I smile and thank Jesus that I will see her again.
