Title: Father of Lights

Scripture: James 1:17 ESV

The advantage of being old (and there are advantages) is that you often have the perspective of many generations. Every generation seems to specialize and be categorized in different ways.

My Mother is part of the Silent Generation.

I am a baby boomer.

Three of my children are Gen X. My youngest is Gen Y.

My five oldest grandchildren are Gen Z. My three youngest grandchildren are Generation Alpha.

Why does that matter? Simply put because specific groups of people who are born at the same time, share many of the same experiences in the world.

My mother was alive during the Great Depression. I was born during a time of a baby boom when many children were born (children born after WW2).

Gen Xers are classified as being highly independent and self-reliant. Gen Y people understand technology and have strong social values.

Gen Zers are pragmatic and financially cautious. They value diversity.

Generation Alphas are immersed in technology they understand and rely on AI.

In college I took sociology and I was fascinated by the study of society. If college ever becomes free for retired people I would seriously consider getting a degree in sociology (well AND psychology). I personally think that would be a grand idea because it’s a great way to keep Senior brains over 65 going.

So why did I share all of this data? It’s because knowing and understanding the generations is a gift…I believe it’s a gift from God.

James 1:17 tells us, “Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of lights, with whom there is no variation or shadow due to change.”

God revealed to James and important facets of information about God. God gives every perfect gift.

God is all about revealing what is good and profitable. God shines a light on everything that is good. There are good and not so good attributes about every generation.

Just as there are specific characteristics for every generation born, there are reasons groups of people can be identified by those characteristics. Baby boomers share similar social characteristics. There are reasons every generation shares similar social characteristics.

Our experiences change us. My mother is financially careful. A penny means something to her. Everyone she knew when to church.

I am not as concerned about where my next meal will come from because I’ve never been without food. Study’s show (AI) that 58% of boomers are associated with a church. I must add to that the fact that many boomers do online church and that may not be part of the data.

The point is that the differences and nuances of every generation are a direct result of what was happening in the world at the time that generation was alive. We are creatures of social order.

No man is an island. We need our differences.

Those differences are a great gift from God.

For example, my Mother who counts her pennies occasionally needs reminders that it’s okay to treat herself to something she loves. I do remind her.

I need to be reminded it is okay to save my pennies.

Together we find balance.

And that is a great gift from the Father of Lights.

In God,

Deborah
