It’s difficult for us to imagine that all the elements in the universe were created by and from the elements from God.

In Genesis 1:3, “And God said, “Let there be light,” and there was light.”

God proclaimed BE LIGHT and there WAS LIGHT.

God spoke and creation emerged.

That was on day one.

In Genesis 1:2 we are told that there was no form on earth and there was a void. We are also told the Spirit hovered over the waters.

I’ve been part of several discussions about how creation happened. When I was in Seminary I discussed the timing with others. I came to a point where I realized we are not given an clues about the timing. In my mind it doesn’t matter if it happened in an instant or if it took thousands of years. God set the action in motion. So, while there are theories in relation to the timing, in the end the timing does not change the fact that according to ancient scripture when God spoke light emerged.

When we think of life using that as a backdrop, everything else pales in comparison.

If God can speak and the dark void becomes light, then the same God can performs signs, wonders, and healings today.

Simply put, God can do anything. God can heal. God can calm any storm. God can speak.

In reality, God HAS spoken. In scripture God spoke to the ancients and to the prophets. Jesus the Son spoke to thousands. Jesus spoke to the Apostle Paul on the Road to Damascus.

God still speaks today. God invites us to be loved. God wants to share the wonder of creation with us.

The truth is, I think God gave me a wonderful gift. It’s a gift that few adults have been given.

See, I am as tall as a child and I have a vivid imagination.

I feel the unformed darkness…the void. In the silence of that moment I can hear the breath of God. I cannot see God but I can feel God’s holy presence. God thinks of “light” and whispers it into being.

The dawn breaks and it is beautiful!

In I John 1:5b we learn, “God is light, and in him is no darkness at all.”

We do not need to walk in darkness. When we feel the darkness trying to overtake us, we can turn to God and rest in the light of God’s love.

God came in the flesh and told us, ““I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will not walk in darkness, but will have the light of life” (John 8:12).

Even if we are in a noisy crowded subway, we can rest God’s light.

When the world feels like it’s closing in on us we can ask God to shine light on us.

We read in Micah 7:8:

“Rejoice not over me, O my enemy;     when I fall, I shall rise; when I sit in darkness,     the Lord will be a light to me.”

When we are afraid, we can turn to the light of the world.

Psalm 18:28 tells us:

“For it is you who light my lamp;     the Lord my God lightens my darkness.”

God’s word is for you…God proclaims in Genesis 1:3, BE Light and there IS light.

When I was younger I thought life was filled with hills and valleys and I just had to survive the valleys. The older I get I am reminded of the Apostle Paul’s words in Romans 8:28, “And we know that for those who love God all things work together for good, for those who are called according to his purpose.”

All things. All the time. Work for our good.

When we connect to the source of light, everything works together for our good.

Today’s Spiritual Practice is: All Things Good

Consider what that means in your life…

In God, Deborah
