Deuteronomy 6:5 ESV

When I first started college they enrolled me in English Composition. I was glad because in high school I’d done well in English. I really accredited it to the teacher.

She was wonderfully funny and entertaining (in a snide sore of way). She would be teaching and if the class was not really paying attention she would say or do something that was hilarious. Of course that programmed us well and we came to a point where we expected her to interject something we did (didn’t) expect.

It was a great attention technique.

In Freshman Composition in college there were no jokes, and he spoke so fast we had trouble keeping up. I was certain I was doomed. So was everyone else.

Compositions were written in class and they were timed. As soon as we were given the “go” I prayed and I started writing whatever was in my head. I wrote like a madman and I never did run out of time. But I was certain I would not do well.

I was shocked when I received my first graded paper. I peeked at it but I did not share it. I did not smile or frown.

I received an A.

Deuteronomy 6:5 tells us , “You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your might.” From that moment on I was really thankful that God was helping me. I really loved God for the help!

I walked away from that course with an A. I came to believe that God really was a genius.

From that point on I prayed before every paper and every test for every class. English and Speech were the only classes I did really well in so I flipped a coin and declared a major. I did not want to double major and in 1972 no one I knew double majored. There’s much more to the story but I can tell you I have a B.A. in Speech Communication.

I’ve always said if they make college free I’ll go back and major in English.

I do love God who helps me. I do love school. Maybe by the time I’m 90 years old it will be free so I can go back to school.
