Isaiah 58:7 NLT
Now Mama was born before the great market crash in 1929 so by the time she was old enough to walk
and talk she was taught to be frugal. A primary rule in her house was not to waste anything (waste not
want not). She was (is) careful about every penny (a penny spent is a penny earned).
Even though her daddy had a really steady job as a railroad mechanic she learned that meant they had
been blessed and they needed to share the blessing.
They lived in an older two story home and every room was cleaned and ready for use. When a family
showed up at Grandma’s door because they couldn’t find work they all stayed with my Gramma and
Grampa until they found work. Every room was filled, especially during the depression. Extra meals and
laundry were done daily by or for the guests. Everyone worked to fill the need, even the visitors.
No one complained about the extra work. So, by the time she was old enough to talk and walk she was
given a job in the home. That’s because waste not want not included energy to work.
Mama knew because they had food and a big house it meant you share what you have with those in
need. Isaiah 58:7 tells us to “Share your food with the hungry, and give shelter to the homeless.” They
shared their home, their food, their hands and their hearts with those in need.
Everyone went to church on Sunday. Gramma played the piano at church every Sunday. They were
Methodists but they didn’t discriminate about where other people went to church. Everybody went to
some church in those days. The question was not, “do you go to church”. It was “where do you go to
church”.
After church all the women and children helped to cook a big meal. After Sunday dinner was over the
adults took it easy while the children played. Family members came to visit. The evening meal on Sunday
consisted of the leftovers from the noon meal. There were always enough leftovers for everyone to eat on
Sunday dinner. Even if the visiting family members were there for the last meal of the day no one went hungry no matter what! Mama’s Mama had definite rules about making sure everyone hadtheir fill.
She believed God was our provider and God would provide everything we need. She was the hands and feet of a Jesus all the days of her life.
