John 6:16-21 NLT
Imagine you are part of a group in a boat and you were somewhat disappointed that your own particular friend didn’t come to see you before you set out to cross the lake on your was to Capernaum.
All of you were hoping He would come, but since it was getting dark the group decided they needed to cross the lake without Him.
All of you in the boat were thinking about what had happened that day. Thousands came to hear Jesus. All of you wondered where they all came from. Then, you remembered it was time to eat. Everyone in the crowd HAD to be hungry, but you barely had enough food to feed yourselves.
Then Jesus asked you for the food you had. He blessed the food. Then as the food was being distributed you began to notice the basket was always full. Jesus fed everyone and there was even food left over.
How can this happen, you thought!
There were so many things you didn’t understand.
John wrote about what happened in the boat.
“That evening Jesus’ disciples went down to the shore to wait for him. But as darkness fell and Jesus still hadn’t come back, they got into the boat and headed across the lake toward Capernaum. Soon a gale swept down upon them, and the sea grew very rough. They had rowed three or four miles when suddenly they saw Jesus walking on the water toward the boat. They were terrified, but he called out to them, “Don’t be afraid. I am here!” Then they were eager to let him in the boat, and immediately they arrived at their destination! (John 6:16-21).
You remember waiting in the boat for Jesus to come but it was getting dark so you went ahead thinking he wouldn’t be coming.
Then after you were far beyond the shore you saw someone coming!
How could someone walk on the water?
Did your eyes deceive you?
As the man got closer to the boat you could tell it was Jesus. He came to the boat and stepped in like nothing unusual was happening.
All of us in the boat were speechless.
Jesus had just walked across the water like it was hard dry ground. His feet weren’t even very wet.
All of us in the boat were speechless. We didn’t even know what to ask. We wanted to know how He had walked on top of the water, but not one of us could speak.
Jesus smiled and looked at us like nothing unusual had happened.
As we reached the shore and got out of the boat we barely said a word.
Honestly, we didn’t know how to ask whay (or how) it happened?.
Seriously, if you would have been in the boat that night, what would you have said?
What would you have thought?
How would you have felt?
