Purified Souls

Living in the 21st Century affords us many blessings our parents didn’t have, yet on the flip side they have blessings we do not have.

When my Grandfather was born in 1900 they lived a simpler life. He was born on a farm where he had many siblings. They lived off the land. They did not have electricity in the home. There was no phone or indoor toilet.

Yet everyone gathered together on Sunday morning in church built by the congregation. They shared faith, hardships, and stories of blessings.

They trusted in Jesus to survive. They all worked hard.

They did not have the physical advantages of comfort we have, but they relied on each other and they had faith. They trusted in God because that’s how they survived.

I Peter 1:21-22 tells us because Jesus was crucified and raised from the dead, “your trust can be in God who raised Christ from the dead and gave him great glory. Now your faith and hope can rest in him alone. Now you can have real love for everyone because your souls have been cleansed from selfishness and hatred when you trusted Christ to save you; so see to it that you really do love each other warmly, with all your hearts.”

Just one generation later, my Mother was raised in a large city. They had electricity in the home. They had

indoor plumbing. They had a car. Everyone went to church because that was their meeting place. They trusted in Jesus, but life had significantly changed. It was no longer physically difficult to survive.

The story goes on and on…my grandchildren live in a very different world. They all live in a world of instant communication and air controlled homes. No matter how cold or hot it gets, the temperature in their home remains the same.

They trust in God for salvation but day to day provision is not really a consideration.

Through it all, God is the same. God has provided and will provide. We trust IN God.
