Rain Down

Exodus 16:4 MSG

Every day when I sit down to write, I stop and I think about what to write. Even though I’ve had many many many many writing classes in college and seminary. I’m often clueless about where to start. So I stop and pray.

My dad taught me to pray and ask when I was very young. When I prayed I knew I was not on my own when I wrote because God was always with me and would always help me. Ever so gradually I became a accustomed to relying on God when I write (and draw).

I also pray about the scripture for the day. This morning when God led me to Exodus 16:4 and I read it I wondered what the correlation was but then God revealed it.

In Exodus 16:4 we are told, “God said to Moses, “I’m going to rain bread down from the skies for you. The people will go out and gather each day’s ration.”

See when I thought of rain coming down I assumed it was water droplets from the sky. Do you see where I’m going with this? Yeah, yeah, once again, I underestimated God.

I underestimated the power of God.

Even now in my seventh decade I still underestimate the power of God.

The problem is, I’m human and I think like a human. So when I get to the point where I’m thinking like a human, I have to remember scripture and all of the things God does for us.

The key is still God today. The nature and character of God has not changed. There are some who believe the things God did in Bible times are different than what God does and can do today, but I do not agree.

We worship the same God.

The biggest difference (though not the only difference) is that under the new covenant, God provided away for us to have personal power from God. Those who believe in the power of Jesus, have access to the power of God living IN us.

After the Ascension, when Jesus returned to heaven, God sent the Holy Spirit to be with those who turned to him. So is it possible that we don’t exhibit the use of the power today in this world?

I do not know the answer to that but I learned in Spiritual Direction asking the question and sitting with the answer is the beginning. So today, I ask you the question, how far reaching is the power of God in today’s world?

Is there an end to the power of God?

In your opinion, does God really answer prayer today?

The answer to that is really up to you. Each of us develops our own theology. Each of us read scripture and listens to sermons and considers how it changes us.
