Amos 5:14-17 ESV
As we’ve studied Amos’ prophesies we’ve been reminded that every day in every way we make choices. Amos reiterates that message from God to God’s children.
In Amos 5:14-17 Amos wrote, “Seek good, and not evil, that you may live; and so the Lord, the God of hosts, will be with you, as you have said HATE evil, and LOVE good, and establish justice in the gate; it may be that the Lord, the God of hosts, will be gracious to the remnant of Joseph. Therefore thus says the Lord, the God of hosts, the Lord: “In all the squares there shall be wailing, and in all the streets they shall say, ‘Alas! Alas!’ They shall call the farmers to mourning and to wailing those who are skilled in lamentation, and in all vineyards there shall be wailing, for I will pass through your midst,” says the Lord.”
This past week I started a new adventure with my site. I added a cartoon with my feisty pup as the main character.
In the cartoon there is a large laundry basket filled with clean socks. My pup Auby had a grand ole’ time playing in the socks.
But as often is the case, all good things come to an end. Auby was told he was chosen to fold all of the socks.
But…instead of folding them he reaches out to a neighborhood cat and strikes up an agreement to pay the cats in the neighborhood to fold the socks. The cats come in during the night and fold the socks.
The next morning Mom is happy as Auby takes credit for folding the socks.
Time will tell how the cartoon will play out, but as I wrote and drew the cartoon I was reminded that in the story Auby made a choice that will probably catch up with him.
The truth is…somehow the truth rises to the top. It’s a silly example, but it makes a point.
God tells Israel to hate evil and love good. It isn’t just for the sake of the “thing” it’s because good really does eventually triumph. In all my years I’m always pleasantly surprised when the good is nowhere to be seen and then suddenly out of nowhere GOOD emerges.
I know I am a crazy optimist but I believe good emerges by the grace of God.
That’s because God really is everywhere in everything even in the darkest corners of the universe.
In my cartoon my pup Auby really has been quite naughty and in the end the truth will eventually emerge (but not this week).
The good news about God is that we have seen glimpses of the end and while we don’t know exactly when or how, God does win.
That gives us great hope to hold onto because when God wins…we all win.
