Series: Hear Me
I cannot imagine what life would be like without Jesus and the Help of the Holy Spirit on earth.
I was twelve years old when the Helper became my constant guide and companion.
John 14:26 tells us, “But the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, he will teach you all things and bring to your remembrance all that I have said to you.”
I remember the night everything changed.
I went to the Stadium in Kansas City on my church bus. Billy Graham was speaking and for some reason I decided to go. It’s strange (very strange) that I went without my parents. Even though they knew others who went, they usually accompanied me.
Even though I don’t remember why I must have been compelled by the Spirit because that night everything in my life changed forever.
The instant I entered the stadium a hurricane wind swept through me. I wept the whole time I was there.
I don’t remember anything else except I really really wanted Jesus in my life.
Nothing else mattered except Jesus.
The year was 1967 and it was September. I would have just turned fourteen.
We had talked about the Helper or the Holy Spirit at church but it was in a matter of fact way. It was not a charismatic church where the Spirit was discussed. My knowledge of the Spirit was relegated to speaking about The Father, the Son, and the Spirit. So when a strong wind swept through my soul I did not know what was happening.
I only knew I would never be the same again.
I’ve written about my reaction before…I wept the entire time I was there and on the bus ride back home.
I cannot effectively communicate the intense feeling of power and love I experienced that night.
Looking back I remember wanting to talk to my dad about what happened to me when I entered the stadium.
When I got home I was crying and at first he thought something bad happened. It took a little time for me to describe how I felt, but once I explained he immediately knew it was the Holy Spirit wind that I experienced. I was and still am ever so grateful that my dad knew what had happened and helped me process it.
My dad did not make light of my experience.
He believed me and he encourage me.
After that night I ‘picked my dad’s brain’ about scripture every chance I spoke with him. He studied his Bible almost all the time and he taught me to pray before I studied.
Looking back I can now see that God had a plan for me all along.
God knew I would be ministry and I would eventually go to Seminary. God prepared me for that Journey.
God knew all along that night would change my life…I didn’t know why I felt so compelled to go to hear Billy Graham, but God knew.
Today, nearly sixty years later, the Spirit still speaks and guides me. I don’t make decisions without God’s help.
I am still ever so grateful that God changed my life that night. By the power of the Spirit, I hear God daily.
