Jeremiah 10:13 ESV
In the seminary community there are different schools of thought about interpretation of scripture. Thinking back to the days when I sat in the classroom and listened to the discussion I have to say I didn’t disagree with any of the interpretations.
I did walk away praying.
I asked for truth.
Jeremiah 10:13 tells us, “When he utters his voice, there is a tumult of waters in the heavens, and he makes the mist rise from the ends of the earth. He makes lightning for the rain, and he brings forth the wind from his storehouses.”
In Jeremiah 10:13 the most confusing and the most interesting word in the Hebrew is מֵאֹצְרֹתָֽיו
It’s pronounced: mê·’ō·ṣə·rō·ṯāw
In some English translations the word used is storehouse (storehouses) or treasuries. I compared the Hebrew word in 31 translations and they used storehouse or treasuries.
Then I turned to The Message and the word mê·’ō·ṣə·rō·ṯāw was translated Warehouse.
I’m not sure why, but when I get stuck on how a word is translated it sticks with me to the point of being laughable. There isn’t a lot of difference between storehouse, treasury, or a warehouse, but there is a slight shift.
A storehouse is defined as a building used to store goods.
A treasury is defined as a place or location where treasure such as currency or precious items is kept.
From the Oxford Dictionary, a warehouse is a large building where raw materials or goods are stored until they are exported.
Exported means to carry or send something to another place.
So whether storehouse is the best word, or warehouse is better, both are intended for eventual export.
In this case, “it” or the item being kept until needed is a treasure.
Taking “it” a step further as we close our eyes we envision a large building, storehouse, or warehouse that hold a great treasure.
The treasure in question is the wind, the ‘RUAH’ pronounce RU-ACH or RU-AK. The breath of God. The ruach of God was first mentioned in Genesis 1:2 when the wind/Spirit of God hovered over the face of the deep. The breath or the Spirit is the creative force that was present at creation.
From everlasting to everlasting the ruach of God was, is, and will always be present.
Now we’re getting somewhere.
The driving force in Jeremiah 10:13 was the element that came forth. The Prophet Jeremiah’s point is not simply that God is Great. The point he is making is that there ARE no other gods. In Samuel 2:2 we are told Yah-wee God is the only God.
The breath Jeremiah spoke of in Jeremiah 10:13 was the endless everlasting breath of the only everlasting driving force in all the universes.
That was THE point.
The Ru-ach wind that was being kept was the same wind that had hovered over the deep from everlasting to everlasting. That wind Jeremiah spoke of was present before earth was created and it will be present long after the earth is gone.
From everlasting to everlasting the breath of God was, is, and will be present. Quite frankly, I find that a bit difficult to assimilate. In perfect holiness and unparalleled power, the breath of God will always and forever BE.
