Series: Hear God
I remember the day I was given my very own Bible. Because my dad read and cherished his Bible I knew it was a precious gift.
Hebrews 4:12 says,
“For the word of God is living and active, sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing to the division of soul and of spirit, of joints and of marrow, and discerning the thoughts and intentions of the heart.”
There are myriad of ways we hear God, and we know that scripture is one way we can hear God. But there is a catch.
It’s not that God doesn’t want to communicate the WORD to us. It’s because God loves us and doesn’t want to “short-change” us.
Praying and asking to be able to hear God is helpful but it takes practice.
Lots of practice.
When I was young and I wanted to hear God but struggled so I asked ‘me da’ why he could hear God and I struggled.
His response was “keep sitting with God”.
Through seven decades I came to realize that is because God is all about relationship. God loves us and wants us to return that love.
God wants us to want the relationship. As we sit with God and give God our full attention we learn to love God and rely on God. As we read scripture our relationship with God grows deeper. We begin to understand God’s love.
Receiving God’s love is the greatest gift God gave us. That’s why Jesus came to earth. Through Jesus’ sacrificial love we come to realize just how much God loves us.
Then after Jesus went back to heaven God made a way for us to really really connect by send in the Spirit of God to earth. Through the Spirit we have an integral connection to God. The Spirit is IN us and always with us.
When we turn and ask God to show us the “truth” in God’s Word, the Spirit guides us to truth. It’s been my experience that the Spirit in us really is our helper when we want to understand the truth of scripture.
The Word of God is alive in us.
The Word is active and calls to us.
The Word is “sharp” in us and provides quick accurate answers to our questions and our needs.
The Spirit pierces our mind and soul through the Word of God.
The Spirit reveals God’s truth to us through the Word of God.
Prayer increases our ability to hear. When Christians meet together we gain strength in our ability to hear and connect with God.
When I was young and I went to hear Billy Graham and thousands packed the stadium. Thousands of believers were praying for the presence of God.
Thousands heard.
While I sat in the stadium I cried and cried. At the time I was embarrassed but later I realized it was a great blessing. Sixty years later I believe that God knew what I would need in the years to come and God provided the way. God wanted me to remember the presence of the Spirit all the days of my life.
God wanted me to remember the power of the Spirit when I lost everything I had known. God wanted me to know where to turn during those dark hours.
God wanted me to ‘hang on’ as the Spirit guided me to my new life. That new life included a very long wonderful journey through Seminary. I was very afraid but God was with me every step of the way.
God knew exactly what I needed.
Every day.
