You and Me
There comes a time (hopefully) in the life of every person who seeks something more to life. As they seek they reach out to test the waters to see if they can find what they’re looking to find.
Some people find that something more in church and some find that something more while watching the sun set.
Even though you might have learned about finding something more to life in Sunday School or by watching a service on television you may not have experienced anything extraordinary there.
My something more came when I was at a Football Stadium in Kansas City in 1967. I didn’t expect anything spectacular to happen that night. I was wrong. The Spirit of God came upon me and flooded my soul. I had studied who Jesus was but until that night I didn’t know Jesus.
After that night and until this day, God in me has been the greatest gift of my life.
While I grew up in church reading stories about Jesus and God, that night being created IN God by God and For God became real.
In Psalm 139:13-16 David wrote, “For you formed my inward parts; you knitted me together in my mother's womb.I praise you, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made. Wonderful are your works; my soul knows it very well.My frame was not hidden from you, when I was being made in secret, intricately woven in the depths of the earth. Your eyes saw my unformed substance; in your book were written, every one of them, the days that were formed for me, when as yet there was none of them.”
Also after that night scripture came to life. I knew God formed my inward parts. God created me for a purpose. At a young age I didn’t know what that purpose was, but I knew God had a purpose for me because others told me God has a purpose for me.
The Prophet Jeremiah wrote in 1:5, ““Before I formed you in the womb I knew you, and before you were born I consecrated you; I appointed you a prophet to the nations.”
That was true for Jeremiah and true for you and I. God formed us. God knew us before we were born. God consecrated us. God appointed us for a purpose. God created us for His pleasure. God created us in His image. God loves and created us to be loved.
Ephesians 2:10 says, “For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand, that we should walk in them.”
In 1967 when the Spirit came upon me I did not know my purpose. I did know I really wanted God.
After that night I knew I wanted God to guide me TO a life that would be filled with God’s love. If God would have told me that I would spend my life listening and waiting to serve God I would not have understood God’s purpose.
If God would have told me I would go to Seminary and I would seek my way to God’s plan, I would not have believed it.
If God said I would sit with a Spiritual Director for a decade so I would understand the ancient practice of Spiritual Direction, I would have thought it could not be possible.
Only God knew the way.
Only God knew the how.
Only God opened the doors.
Even if God would have told me in advance where I would go and what I would do, I wouldn’t have understood it.
Acts 17:24-27 tells us, “The God who made the world and everything in it, being Lord of heaven and earth, does not live in temples made by man, nor is he served by human hands, as though he needed anything, since he himself gives to all mankind life and breath and everything. And he made from one man every nation of mankind to live on all the face of the earth, having determined allotted periods and the boundaries of their dwelling place, that they should seek God, and perhaps feel their way toward him and find him. Yet he is actually not far from each one of us,”
Even when I was confused and afraid, God assured me there was a plan and God would show me the way.
It seems so simple now…but years and years ago it did not look like anything would work out and make sense.
God knew. God knew exactly what and when and how and where.
And God was right.
