A Dream

Job 33:15-17 NCV

God speaks even today through dreams and visions. They can happen at any time throughout the day or night to any believer.

We know from Job 33:15-17, “He speaks in a dream or a vision of the night when people are in a deep sleep, lying on their beds. He speaks in their ears and frightens them with warnings to turn them away from doing wrong and to keep them from being proud.”

I’ve had people tell me they believe that method of communication from God was only for Biblical times. So when I tell them I have the gift of dreams and visions and God speaks to me in pictures…or movies they are surprised.

I had my first dream at night that came true when I was twelve years old. Thankfully, my dad was able to help me understand what God was saying to me. Once we established and verified the dream or vision I had some idea how I would know the dream or vision was from God.

Because we always dream I had to establish how to understand if the dream was from God or if it was just a common dream. I came to realize when I woke up from having a dream from God the space around me felt set apart. It actually felt Holy like God was there.

I also came to realize the Holy Spirit stood with me when the dream was from God. When I was twelve and I went to hear Billy Graham speak in Kansas City the entire property was filled with a sense of holiness. I came to realize when I had a dream from God my bedroom felt the same way.

God was very helpful in showing me how to put the pieces together.

When I had a vision the same feeling of the presence of the Holy Spirit was there. Throughout my lifetime God has warned me of changes coming.

In addition to the presence of the movement of the Spirit I’ve also had people who have the gift of prophesy verify a change was coming. Three specific times three different people have told me God is about to move in my life. God showed them the movement or that a change was coming but no specific details were given to me. I met an older man when I was in my early twenties who prophesied over me several times.

Please understand I wasn’t raised in a church that focused heavily on the gifts of the Spirit. I was raised Disciples of Christ and as an older teenager I was United Methodist. After I married I was Southern Baptist and at midlife I was ELCA Lutheran. Only one of those churches spoke about having dreams and visions. I have prayed with a friend at a Roman Catholic Church and the presence of the Spirit was very strong in that space. Thankfully, when I was young my dad believed me and encouraged me to listen and watch for the movement of the Spirit.

At various times I met people who told me I made it up and God did not speak to us in that way now.

I knew when it was God.

To this day I know the movement of the Spirit. Especially when I walk into a church I know when the Spirit is present. If I do not get a strong sense of the presence of the Spirit I invite the Spirit to come into that space.

Just as God spoke to Job, God still speaks to us today. Old Testament scripture is not in chronological order and Job was written sometime between 6th to 4th Century BCE. Scholars believe Job is one of the oldest books of the Bible.

God still speaks to us through dreams and visions today.
