Psalm 34:8 ESV
When we choose God we also choose goodness, for no man is consistently and inherently good.
Only God is good 100% of the time.
Psalm 34:8 says, “Oh, taste and see that the Lord is good! Blessed is the man who takes refuge in him!”
Think of it this way…when we take refuge in God we inherit God’s goodness.
It seems easy, doesn’t it?
I wish…but there is a conundrum.
While we can say we want goodness, it’s not a one time choice. That’s because the circumstances of life can change and being good doesn’t always produce a good and perfect result. That can come about because of external pressure or internal choices we make without understanding the outcome.
It’s also because life is complex
Goodness is part of the complexity.
There once was a man who worked hard and had his whole life mapped out.
He was a good man who had good intentions.
He always looked for the good in life and in others.
Then one day someone noticed he had a far away look in his eye and that man asked him what he was dreaming about.
The good man did not want to share his dream and so he told the man he he was not dreaming and he went back to work. The man knew he lied but he reasoned one small lie wouldn’t matter.
As time went on the lie grew in his heart and soon he couldn’t remember the lie from the truth.
The man didn’t face the lie and he did not turn to God with it. He simply acted like it hadn’t happened.
The lie wasn’t his biggest problem though.
Because of his hidden lie he didn’t want to face God so he seldom prayed.
Because he wasn’t talking to God he wasn’t connected to God’s goodness and he seemed to be confused about making good choices.
He wanted goodness but he didn’t feel good. He seemed to be stuck in a rut and he couldn’t find his way out.
He couldn’t find his way to the refuge of God. Then in time the man forgot about going to God. We need to remember that our love and through God’s goodness in us we can pass it on to other we meet who have lost their way.
