Amos 2:7b-8 ESV
I was taught that sin is sin. While that is true in every way, there are sins that appear to disgust God more than other sins. So, while sin IS sin, I’d say according to scripture there are some sins that are an abomination.
For example, in Amos 2:7b-8, “a man and his father go in to the same girl, so that my holy name is profaned; they lay themselves down beside every altar on garments taken in pledge, and in the house of their God they drink the wine of those who have been fined.”
We have to be aware that there are times when we look to the motive and our conduct. We also have to consider the setting. In this case the ‘man and his father’ are in the house of God. For us it would be something like a man and his father going to church and intentionally thinking ‘I’ll show you God’. They both proceed to have sex with the same girl.
This sin had levels!
Sin #1 profaning the house of God. According to Leviticus 18:21 and Leviticus 21:6 both men defiled the Holy name of God. Not only that but they gave children to be sacrificed.
Both father and son see the girl and they lust after her. Sin #2
Sin #3 Both father and son give in to their evil passions. Now, we do not know if she is a prostitute or a maid, but at this point it doesn’t really matter. We do not know why she was in the house of God. She could have gone there to seek forgiveness and reconciliation from God. Regardless of why she was there, scripture confirms that as the two men lusted after her and “took her” and the Holy name of God was profaned.
Sin #4 The two men layed down at the Holy altar on Holy garments. This was a deal…a big deal. It means they desecrated the altar AND the Holy cloth.
Sin #5 in the house of God they drank the tainted wine. This wasn’t just plain wine. It was wine that had been paid for through fines imposed by the temple. This reeks of hypocrisy because they were oppressing the poor. God really really hates it when the poor are oppressed!
The list is most likely incomplete but you get the idea. This was not just any sin.
God is not pleased. Plus, this sin hurt God to the core.
What the men did and even thought was an abomination.
To God, Deborah
